Shadow Extraction is the signature ability of the Shadow Monarch, Ashborn. After Jinwoo inherits Ashborn's powers through the System, he gains access to this skill. By touching the shadow of a recently killed enemy or creature, Jinwoo can attempt to extract their soul and bind it as a shadow soldier.
The extraction can fail if the target's will is exceptionally strong — a shadow may resist and be destroyed in the process. Successfully extracted shadows retain the combat abilities they possessed in life, though their personality is reduced to absolute loyalty. Jinwoo can strengthen individual shadows by spending shadow energy, raising their grade and expanding their skill set.
Igris — The Bloodred Commander
Igris was the knight commander of the Demon Castle boss dungeon encountered early in Jinwoo's System journey. He is the first elite shadow Jinwoo successfully extracts and becomes the template for what a high-grade knight-type shadow looks like.
Armored in crimson plate and wielding a sword, Igris is disciplined, powerful, and serves as Jinwoo's de facto field lieutenant in the early arcs. As Jinwoo's power grows, Igris is repeatedly upgraded until he reaches Marshal grade.
Beru — The Shadow Ant King
Beru was the Ant King of Jeju Island, the most powerful magic beast in Korea before Jinwoo slew him. Extracting Beru was a watershed moment — his raw power, speed, and the Blood-Claw technique made him arguably the strongest shadow in the army for a significant portion of the story.
Unlike most shadows, Beru retains a degree of personality — specifically a fierce competitive streak and a grudging respect for strength. He also develops the ability to speak, which he uses to express his displeasure at being ordered around by 'lesser' shadows. Despite his arrogance, his loyalty to Jinwoo is absolute.
Iron — The Steel Shadow
Iron was a Korean B-Rank hunter who participated in the Red Gate double-dungeon incident. He was killed and later extracted as a shadow, becoming one of Jinwoo's earliest humanoid soldiers. While not as powerful as Igris or Beru, Iron's tanking capability and resilience made him a reliable frontline shadow in the mid-game arcs.
Bellion — The Grand Marshal
Bellion is the most powerful shadow in Jinwoo's army and holds the highest rank: Grand Marshal. He was originally the highest-ranking soldier under Ashborn himself and was waiting inside the Shadow Monarch's domain for the arrival of a new worthy host.
Bellion's combat power exceeds even Beru's, and he serves as the supreme commander of the Shadow Army in Jinwoo's absence. His appearance — a towering armored figure with blades of shadow energy — is among the most visually iconic in the entire series.
Tank — The Shadow Beast
Tank is an ice bear-type shadow extracted during the Demon Castle arc. While not elite in the same sense as Igris or Beru, Tank is notable because Jinwoo keeps him as a personal mount and pet rather than a pure combat unit. He represents the variety within the Shadow Army — not every shadow is a humanoid knight.
Shadow Army vs. Monarch Power
The Shadow Monarch's army is distinct from the power used by other monarchs. Most monarchs command armies of living creatures they have dominated — Baran the Storm Monarch rules lightning giants, Querehsha the Plague Monarch controls insects. Only Ashborn's lineage can extract and command the dead.
This makes the Shadow Army uniquely self-sustaining: every enemy Jinwoo kills becomes a potential recruit, meaning his forces grow stronger with each battle rather than being depleted by losses.
